Year 6

Our writing will link to our term class texts.

We will be exploring the skills of writing varied sentence structures, using advanced punctuation, such as semi-colons, and using a wide range of vocabulary. We will do this through the genres of narrative, non-chronological report and instructions.
Weekly spellings will no longer be sent home but instead weekly and daily spelling lessons will take place in school.

We will be covering the following objectives:

• Place value – numbers up to millions
• Addition and subtraction – mental and written methods for large numbers
• Multiplication and Division – mental methods relating to times tables knowledge and written methods, multiplying and dividing by 1- and 2-digit numbers. Knowing multiples, factors, prime numbers and square numbers

In Term 1, we will be learning about electricity, building circuits and drawing simple circuits using key symbols to represent components. We will look at different components of the circuits, like buzzers and bulbs, and the factors which affect their function.

In Term 2, we will look at the human body and the circulatory system, finding out what is in our blood and how our hearts work.

In Term 1 we will be exploring conflicts through history. In Term 1, we will study World War II looking at:

• The outbreak of war
• The countries involved in the war
• The Home Front and The Front Line
• Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill

In Term 2 we will study conflicts since the 20th Century, looking at:

• The social, ethnic, cultural or religious diversity of past society
• The fight for women’s rights
• The civil rights movement

In Jigsaw in Term 1 we will be focusing on “Being Me in My World”. We will explore goals for the year ahead, being a global citizen and how we can contribute to the school community.

 In Term 2, we will explore the topic of “Celebrating difference”. We will look at the differences between us and others, understanding differences in others and the struggles other people may have, and we will explore how we can celebrate these differences.

In Term 1, the children will be exploring the similarities and differences between Christianity and Humanism. They will be delving deep and exploring what matters most to people who follow those beliefs.

This year, we are going to be continuing without ‘Purple Mash’ computing curriculum. We will begin our first unit in Term 2, where the children will get to grips with a range of programming and coding skills.

In Term 1, we will be appraising the work of Mendelssohn to further develop improvisation and composition skills. To do this we will focus on the dynamics, pitch and texture of music.

In D&T this term we will be focussing on building 3D structures. We will spend several lessons creating a 3D lighthouse. The process will include planning, designing and evaluating as well as creating the structure. We will focus on the skills of accurately measuring, cutting using craft knives, and joining parts from a pattern.

Children are expected to read at home at least five times each week for fifteen minutes.  At least one of these times needs to be with an adult but please read more often with your child if you are able. Children are expected to write the date of the read, the book they are reading and the pages they have read in that day. Please ensure that you check and sign reading records each week. Reading records will be checked every Friday.

This year, Year 6 will be following a new way of spelling. The premise of this is that spelling should be ‘taught not caught’. We will be doing daily and weekly spelling sessions but will not be sending spelling lists home for weekly spelling tests. We recognise that this is different from previous years and will be different from other year groups, but we hope this new way of working will see great improvement in spelling!

By Year 6, the children should be confident with all times table facts so constant practice at home will help to embed this.

The children will be continuing with Maths Planets this year and will carry on from their end point in Year 5.  There are sample papers on the maths page of the website to give you an idea of what each stage will look like. Please encourage your child to practise their maths facts at least three times per week. If your child is stuck on a level for more than four weeks, then we will intervene at school.
