Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

We hope you all had a lovely summer break and are ready for another exciting year!

In Year 6 our teachers are Miss Bishop (6B) and Mrs Moon (6M)

PPA will be on a Monday morning – 6B will be taught by Mrs Davies and 6M will be taught by Mr Rodway. Like last year, PE will not be part of our PPA mornings instead both sessions will be taught by the class teacher on the days detailed below. Please ensure children come into school in their PE kit on these days.

PE Days

  • 6M Wednesday and Thursday

Please also make sure the children have their reading records in school every day for reading opportunities.

Current Learning

Term 5 – 6

We have got lots of exciting events planned for over the summer term including camp (6R 15th June and 6B 22nd June), a range of leaver events and our end of year production which is yet to be revealed….

Reading

This term we are reading The Viewer through our English and reading lessons. This is a picture book with a mysterious twist. To continue the theme of mystery, we will be using this text to influence our writing this term. We will also have a continued focus on continuing to develop our reading comprehension skills Please engage in our whole school reading challenge to support your child’s reading at home.

Writing

Our writing will link to a short-animated film called Alma and our class texts: The Viewer and The Golden Cage.

We will revisit some of the basic skills of writing (sentence structure and a range of punctuation) as well as looking in more depth at creating atmosphere through setting description and using dialogue to create character or move the action on in narratives. For non-fiction, we will look at how to write to persuade in a range of different contexts.

Mathematics

We will be covering the following objectives:

  • Angles
  • 2D and 3D shapes and position
  • Area, perimeter and volume
  • Co-ordinates (including reflection and translation on a four-quadrant grid)

We will then be revisiting and revising a range of objectives that have already been taught this year in preparation for SATs and transition to secondary school.

Science

In science this term, we will be learning all about light. This will build on our learning from earlier in Key Stage 2 and we will look at how we are able to see, how light travels, why some objects allow light through and others don’t, how the different parts of the eye work to help us build images of what we see and how and why shadows are created. We will be setting up investigations to build a deeper knowledge of the way in which shadows work.

Art

In Term 5, we will be focusing on painting. We will learn about the artist Claude Monet and the Impressionist movement. We will look at examples of Monet’s artwork and appraise them as well as trying to re-create parts of them ourselves. We will look at colour mixing and different brush strokes. The unit will culminate in our own paintings ‘en plein air’ (outside – just like Monet!).

In Term 6, we will be learning about the artist Lowry to develop our sketching skills and incorporating these into paintings.

RE

In Term 6, we will consider the question ‘what do religions say to us when life gets hard?’ We will revisit the religions Christianity and Islam, which we have learnt about previously, and consider the similarities between them. We will also look at different beliefs surrounding the afterlife, including the Hindu beliefs around reincarnation. We will be able to describe differing beliefs and explain similarities.

PSHE

In Jigsaw, in Term 5, we will be exploring the topic of “Relationships”. We will discuss mental health (what this means, how we can look after our mental health and how we can support others), power and control, being safe online and using technologies responsibly.

In Term 6, we will explore the topic of “Changing Me”. In this unit we look at changes from primary to secondary school and how our bodies change during puberty.

D&T

In D&T this term we are embarking upon a textiles unit. We are going to look at embroidery examples and learn different stitches. Then, we will create and stitch our own design.

P.E.

In Term 5, we will focus on developing our cricket skills and are looking forward to a week of swimming before half term. Finally, we will end the year with a half term of rounders.

Music

In Term 6, we will be putting together our end of year production which will involve a lot of singing (as well as learning lines, taking stage directions and dancing!). Alongside this, we will be composing and preforming our own leaver’s song.

Home Learning – how you can help

Homework

Each child will be given three homework books: SPAG, Maths and Reading. Maths and SPAG questions will be set nightly (around three questions per night) and reading will be set weekly (one text and set of questions per week set on a Friday). The expectation is that the children complete the homework each night (or week for reading) and the homework is marked in class. The maths and SPAG questions should take no more than 5 or 10 minutes and the reading should take 10-20 minutes in total.

Reading

Children are expected to read at home at least five times each week for fifteen minutes.  At least one of these times needs to be with an adult but please read more often with your child if you are able. Children are expected to write the date of the read, the book they are reading and the pages they have read in that day. Please ensure that you check and sign reading records each week. Reading records will be checked every Friday.

Spelling

This year, Year 6 will be following a new way of spelling. The premise of this is that spelling should be ‘taught not caught’. We will be doing daily and weekly spelling sessions but will not be sending spelling lists home for weekly spelling tests. We recognise that this is different from previous years and will be different from other year groups, but we hope this new way of working will see great improvement in spelling!

Maths

By Year 6, the children should be confident with all times table facts so constant practice at home will help to embed this.

The children will be continuing with Maths Planets this year and will carry on from their end point in Year 5.  There are sample papers on the maths page of the website to give you an idea of what each stage will look like. Please encourage your child to practise their maths facts at least three times per week. If your child is stuck on a level for more than four weeks, then we will intervene at school.
