Welcome to Year 5

In Year 5 our teachers are Miss Hitchman (5H) and Ms Rutherford (5R) .

Important Notices: 

  • PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday
  • PPA is on a Friday
  • Reading records will be collected and checked on a Friday.
  • Spelling tests will take place on a Friday.

Current Learning

Terms 5-6

Reading

We will be reading ‘Clockwork’ by Philip Pullman this term, alongside related non-fiction and poetry. Through whole class reading lessons, we will explore the skills of vocabulary, inference, prediction, explaining and summarising.

Please engage in our whole school reading challenge to support your child’s reading at home. Remember, for every 50 reads they can choose a reading book from Mrs Carver!

Writing

Our writing will link to our class text, ‘Clockwork’ by Philip Pullman. We will be exploring the skills of writing varied sentence structures, using advanced punctuation, such as brackets and dashes, and using a wide range of vocabulary. We will do this through the genres of narrative, biographies, non-chronological reports and poetry.

Mathematics

We will be covering the following objectives:

  • Statistics – drawing and reading line graphs, reading and interpreting tables and timetables
  • Measurement – including conversion between units
  • Geometry – looking at shapes and their properties (with a focus on angles)
  • Fractions – a revisit of our home learning
  • Revision of fluency and key topics ready for Year 6

Maths planets will be tested on Fridays.

Science

In Term 5, our topic is ‘Living things and their habitats’. We will learn about how plants reproduce and compare the life cycles of amphibians and insects and mammals. We will also be looking at the work of Sir David Attenborough. We will be using each of our enquiry types to delve into the natural world, both practically and theoretically.

History

We are returning to our topic of ‘Ancient Civilisations’ in Term 6, with a focus on the Ancient Mayans. We will begin by examining a variety of sources and using these to make inferences about Mayan economy, culture, religious beliefs and society, moving on to explore hierarchy in Mayan civilisations and how this impacted day to day life. In addition, we will compare the lives of the Mayans to Britons of the same time period and consider periods of rapid change. Finally, we will link back to our learning on the Ancient Egyptian and Ancient Greek Civilisations to compare and contrast them.

Geography

In Term 6, we will be doing a comparison study between Mexico and South Gloucestershire looking at culture, language, food, economy and society in both places. We will be looking at the oceans and coastline of Mexico and its tourism.

Art

In Term 5 we will be exploring printing. We will be creating different scenes using a range of printing techniques.

Music

At Wheatfield, we follow the Kapow scheme of learning for music. Our focus for term 5 will be the Blues. We will be exploring the history and features of the style.

PSHE

In Jigsaw in Term 5 we will be looking at Relationships, with a focus on technology and how to be safe online. In Term 6 our topic will be ‘Changing Me’, where we will be looking at puberty and conception.

DT

In Term 6 we will be exploring food related to our History topic on the Ancient Mayans – yum!

French

In the summer term, we will continue using Language Angels. We will be exploring the “Family” unit. It would be great if you are able to ask them about their French learning and practise at home.

ICT

In Term 5, we will be creating our own games on Purple Mash. To complete this we will be using our coding and programming skills.

Home Learning – how you can help

Maths

Children need to continue learning for their maths planets; alongside continued practice of times table and related division facts. Maths Planets will be tested each Friday and multiplication grids will be completed throughout the week.

Reading

We ask that you read with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. Make sure you record each read in their log-book as this will contribute to your child’s ‘Reading Challenge’

Reading does not have to be limited to the books children bring home from school. It can include any books they have at home, reads with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Spelling

Children are given a list of spellings at the start of each term, which will be tested each week. These spellings are in their homework book.

Children are also expected – by the end of Y6 – to be confident in the Y5 and Y6 Statutory spellings. You may want to practise these at home with your child too. You can find these below:
