Welcome to Year 4
In Year 4 our teachers are Mrs Daley/Mrs Elmore (4DE) and Mrs Holbrow/Mrs Rees (4HR)
Our PE days are Monday and Thursday
For PE days could you send your child into school dressed in full PE kit. This should include weather appropriate clothes, trainers and their house colour t-shirt. All items should be labelled.
Current Learning
Term 5 – 6
Reading
We will be reading Varjak Paw by SF. Said and Into the Forest by Anthony Browne in the summer term. Through whole class reading lessons we will explore the skills of vocabulary, inference, prediction, fluency and expression. We will also be looking at related non-fiction and poetry.
Please engage in our whole school reading challenge to support your child’s reading at home. For every 50 reads they can choose a reading book from Mrs Carver.
Writing
We will be consolidating and using the grammar skills we have learnt this year in our writing. This will include the use of inverted commas to punctuate speech, adverbs for time, manner and place and descriptive vocabulary with prepositions to create noun phrases.
We will explore these skills through both narrative, non-chronological reports and poetry. We will send home termly spellings and our spelling dictation is on a Friday.
Mathematics
We will be covering the objectives of:
- Geometry: coordinates and translation, statistics and shape
- Money
- Time
We will also be consolidating learning from across the year.
We will continue to do Maths Planets on a Thursday.
Science
In Term 5 and 6 we will be exploring ‘animals including humans’ and ‘sound’.
These are the objectives we will cover:
- Identify how sounds are made and link this to something vibrating
- Explore the pitch of a sound (high or low) and how the volume of sound is affected by the strength of the vibrations and distance affects sound.
- Learn the name and function of the basic parts of the human digestive system.
- Learn the name and function of the different types of teeth in humans.
History
Term 5: This term we will be learning about Romans. We will be focusing on how the Roman Empire grew over time in Europe as well as learning about why the Romans invaded Britain.
Term 6: We will be learning about Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will explore how they tried to invade Britain many times before being successful.
PSHE
Term 5: Relationships
We will be looking at different types of relationships and why these are important. We will identify people we love and express why they are special.
Term 6: Changing me
We will be understanding how personal characteristics come from birth parents. We will also look at internal and external body parts in order to reproduce as well as how your body changes through puberty.

Term 5: Cricket
During this term, we will be working on our catching, bowling and batting skills. As well as learning how to use space to support our team
Term 5: Swimming
We are also going swimming where we will practise both front crawl and back crawl strokes and consolidate our water safety lesson.\
Term 6: Rounders
This term we will be working on striking the ball and fielding. We will learn how to play in different fielding roles.
ICT
In term 5 and 6, our computing topic is Animation. We will be exploring stop animation and we will be creating our own animations using Purple Mash.
How can you help at home?
Reading
We ask that you read’ with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. We will be continuing with our ‘Reading Challenge’, so make sure you record each read in their log book as this will contribute.
Reading does not have to be limited to the books children bring home from school. It can include any books they have at home, reads with siblings or reading books from the local library.
Spelling
Children will be given a list of spellings termly. These will be included in a weekly dictation. These spellings and the dictation will be in their homework book. Spellings will be set and the dictation completed every Friday.
Maths
The children will be continuing with Maths Planets. There are year group overviews and sample papers on the curriculum page on the website to give you an idea of what each stage will look like. Please practise your child’s maths facts at least 3 times a week. If your child is stuck on a level for more than 2 weeks then we will intervene at school.
Alongside these please continue to practise times table facts. Each Friday we will complete a times table challenge in class, so that by the end of Year 4 the children are able to recall all their times table facts up to 12 x 12.
In Year 4, children need to be able to read digital and analogue 24 hour time. Continual practice of this at home will hugely support their learning in class.
