Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

In Year 4 our teachers are Mrs Daley/Mrs Elmore (4DE) and Mrs Holbrow/Mrs Rees (4HR)

Our PE days are Monday and Thursday

For PE days could you send your child into school dressed in full PE kit. This should include weather appropriate clothes, trainers and their house colour t-shirt. All items should be labelled.

Current Learning

Term 1-2

Reading

We will be reading Electrigirl by Jo Cotterill and The Nothing to See Here Hotel by Steven Butler during the autumn term. Through whole class reading lessons, we will explore the skills of vocabulary, inference, prediction, fluency and expression. We will also be looking at related non-fiction and poetry.
Please engage in our whole school reading challenge to support your child’s reading at home and to join in with Wheatfield’s reading incentive – we would like children reading a minimum of five times a week.

Writing

During Term 1 and 2 we will be exploring writing inspired by the books, Journey and The Nothing to See Here Hotel.
We will be recapping skills from previous year groups and exploring the skills of:

  • Expanded noun phrases with prepositions
  • Fronted adverbials for time, place and manner
  • Complex sentences position the subordinate clause at the start and end of sentences.

We will explore these skills through narrative, non-fiction writing and poetry.
We will also explore different spelling rules in our spelling lessons.

Mathematics

We will be covering the objectives of:

  • Place value – knowledge and understanding of four-digit numbers, rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000
  • Addition and Subtraction – adding and subtracting mentally using place value; and adding and subtracting four-digit numbers formally
  • Multiplication and division facts – mental methods relating to times tables knowledge and written methods, multiplying and dividing by a one digit number.

Science

In Term 1 & 2 we will be learning about states of matter and electricity.
These are the objectives we will cover:

  • Understand and compare solid, liquids and gases observing different states.
  • Understand and explain the different roles of the water cycle.
  • Understand and create working electrical circuits using various components
  • Describe the difference between conductors and insulators

Geography

We will be learning about what the climate is like in the Polar Regions and the challenges this poses to life. We will also look at arctic tundra and permafrost and why this makes it difficult for plants and vegetation to live and thrive. Pupils will learn about the effects of climate change on these regions, and particularly the melting of the ice caps. Pupils will then learn about what changes they may be able to make to their lives to reduce their carbon footprints.

PSHE

Term 1: Being Me in my World
We will be setting personal goals, discussing how to face challenges positively and understand rules, rights and responsibilities.

Term 2: Celebrating Difference
We will be developing our understanding of how everybody’s family is different and important to them. We will discuss how words can be hurtful and develop our empathy and understanding of other people’s feelings during these times.

R.E.

We will be learning about what it means to be Hindu in Britain today. We will look at what Hindus do with their families to show their faith. We will make connections with some Hindu beliefs and teachings about aims and duties in life.

Music

Our music lessons will follow Kapow music scheme. In Term 1 and 2, we will be looking at loops and layers when singing.

D&T

In Term 1, we will be making a 3D structure with a hinge mechanism. This will be linked to our story ‘Journey’ where we will make a door to a magical kingdom.

In Term 2 we will be completing our textiles unit. We will be using our sewing skills to make a stuffed monster, which links to our ‘Nothing to see here hotel’ text.

Art

In art, we will be making a 3D sculpture of penguins which links to our geography curriculum ‘Polar Regions’. We will be inspired by the artist Morris Norvin.

We will also be using our painting skills and focusing on the artist David Abbey Paige.

Our PE curriculum

We will start the year recapping on the fundamental skills from Year 3.

Term 1: ball skills and fundamentals
During our PE sessions this term we will focus on a range of ball skills and developing our balancing skills.

Term 2: Dance and fitness
We will be learning different routines during dance and ways to keep fit during fitness.

How can you help at home?

Reading

We ask that you read’ with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. We will be continuing with our ‘Reading Challenge’, so make sure you record each read in their log book as this will contribute.

Reading does not have to be limited to the books children bring home from school. It can include any books they have at home, reads with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Spelling

Children will be given a list of spellings termly.  These will be included in a weekly dictation.  These spellings and the dictation will be in their homework book.  Spellings will be set and the dictation completed every Friday.

Maths

The children will be continuing with Maths Planets.  There are year group overviews and sample papers on the curriculum page on the website to give you an idea of what each stage will look like. Please practise your child’s maths facts at least 3 times a week. If your child is stuck on a level for more than 2 weeks then we will intervene at school.

Alongside these please continue to practise times table facts.  Each Friday we will complete a times table challenge in class, so that by the end of Year 4 the children are able to recall all their times table facts up to 12 x 12.

In Year 4, children need to be able to read digital and analogue 24 hour time.  Continual practice of this at home will hugely support their learning in class.
