Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

In Year 3 our teachers are Mrs Donovan (3D) and Mrs Jackson/Mrs Collins (3JC)

Our P.E. days are Monday and Wednesday. On these days please send your child into school dressed in their full PE kit. This should include weather appropriate clothes, trainers and their house colour t-shirt. All items should be labelled.

Please ensure children bring their reading books into school every day. Books will be changed on a Thursday and we will continue to do Maths Planets on a Friday.

Don’t forget children need a coat in school every day in case of inclement weather.

Current Learning

Term 1-2

Reading

We will be looking at The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton during the autumn term. Through whole class reading lessons we will explore the skills of vocabulary, inference, prediction, fluency and expression. We will also be looking at related non-fiction and poetry.

Please engage in our whole school reading challenge to support your child’s reading at home. For every 50 reads they can choose a reading book from Mrs Carver.

Writing

During Term 1 and 2 we will be exploring writing inspired by Leon and the Place Between by Angela McAllister and The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton.
We will be exploring many different grammatical skills including: –

  • Noun phrases
  • Descriptive words and phrases
  • Contractions (can’t, don’t, won’t)

We will explore these skills through both narrative, instructions and poetry.We will be teaching daily spelling lessons around spelling rules.

Mathematics

We will be covering the objectives of:

  • Place value – knowledge and understanding of three-digit numbers
  • Addition and Subtraction – adding and subtracting mentally using place value; and adding and subtracting three-digit numbers formally
  • Multiplication and division facts – learning our 3, 4 and 8 times tables and their related division facts.

Science

In Term 2 we will be exploring the science unit Animals including Humans. We will be learning to:

  • Identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition
  • Identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement

Geography

In Term 1 we will be exploring Features of Navigation. This will include learning about:

  • Lines of latitude and longitude
  • The equator, tropics and time zones
  • Compass points
  • Biomes

During Term 2 we will be exploring Oceans, Seas and Rivers. We will be studying:

  • The differences between ocean, seas and rivers
  • Local rivers including the River Severn, River Avon and River Trym.
  • The entire course of a river and its features
  • How erosion and deposition affect a river
  • The effects of plastic pollution on the oceans

Art

We will be learning about the artist Katsushika Hokusai. Following this we will be designing and making our own printing blocks, which we will use to create a repeating pattern. We will also use these printing blocks to print onto fabric.

D&T

In Term 1 we will be learning how to make a pouch. We will be using sewing skills to sew our pouch together, adding a button or drawstring.
In Term 2 we will also be learning how to make an ocean animal which opens its mouth using pneumatic mechanisms.

PSHE

Term 1: In Jigsaw we will be focusing on returning to school. We will explore belonging and feeling safe, reconnecting, managing worries and looking positively to the future.
Term 2: Celebrating Difference

We will be developing our understanding of how everybody’s family is different and important to them. Discuss how words can be hurtful and develop our empathy and understanding of other people’s feelings during these times.

R.E.

We will be learning about what Christians do at home, in church and in the wider community and why these things are important to them.

Music

In Term 2 our music learning will focus around Ballads. The children will learn to listen and appraise other Ballad songs as well as composing their own with actions.

P.E.

Term 1: Fundamental skills (throwing, catching, balance) and dodgeball.
Term 2: OAA (outdoor team building) and rugby.

Our P.E. days are Monday and Wednesday.

Home Learning – how you can help at home?

Reading

We ask that you read with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. Please record any reading you have done with your child in their reading record as this will count towards their Reading Challenge (meaning your child can earn the prize of a book every time they read 50 times). This does not need to be limited to the books children bring home from school. It can include any books they have at home, any reading they do with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Reading books will be changed and reads will be counted on a Friday.

Spelling

At the beginning of term, your child will bring home the spellings for each week of that term. On each Friday, they will be tested on the spellings for that week in the form of a dictation. Completed spelling dictations will be stuck into your child’s homework book so you can see how they got on (and where they may require further support).

Each set of spellings will contain the patterns / rules that we have been learning in class and are a way of reinforcing these.  Please practise spelling at least 3 times each week with your child.

Maths

The children should now know which level they are on for Maths Planets – if there is any confusion please come and see your child’s class teacher.
