Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

In Year 3 our teachers are Mrs Donovan (3D) and Mrs Jackson/Mrs Collins (3JC)

Our P.E. days are Monday and Wednesday. On these days please send your child into school dressed in their full PE kit. This should include weather appropriate clothes, trainers and their house colour t-shirt. All items should be labelled.

Please ensure children bring their reading books into school every day. Books will be changed on a Thursday and we will continue to do Maths Planets on a Friday.

Don’t forget children need a coat in school every day in case of inclement weather.

Current Learning

Term 5 – 6

Reading

We will be reading Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure by Alex T. Smith and The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman in the summer term. Through whole class reading lessons we will explore the skills of vocabulary, inference, prediction, fluency and expression. We will also be looking at related non-fiction and poetry.

Please engage in our whole school reading challenge to support your child’s reading at home. For every 50 reads they can choose a reading book from Mrs Carver.

Writing

During Term 5 and 6 will be exploring writing inspired by the books Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure and The Firework Maker’s Daughter.

We will be consolidating and using the grammatical skills we have learnt this year into our writing. This will include the use of inverted commas to punctuate speech, adverbs for time, manner and place and descriptive vocabulary to create noun phrases.

We will send home termly spellings and our spelling dictation is on a Friday.

Mathematics

We will be covering the following maths objectives:

  • Fractions
  • Money
  • Time
  • Shape
  • Statistics

We will continue to do Maths Planets on a Thursday.

Science

In Term 5 we will be looking at plants. These are some of our objectives:

  • Learn to identify each part of a flowering plant: roots, stem / trunk, leaves & flowers
  • Learn about the function of each part of a flowering plant: roots, stem / trunk, leaves & flowers
  • Learn that plants make their own food using their leaves and sunlight
  • Explore what plants need to grow and be healthy

History

In Term 6 we will looking at how Bristol came to be and learning about the significant individuals from the area. We will begin by exploring how Bristol developed as a port and then learn that by the mid-20th century Bristol’s port’s success began to decline. We will then look at the work of Brunel, before exploring modern day Bristol.

Geography

This term children will progress their mapping skills by drawing sketches of Bradley Stoke and comparing them to published Ordnance Survey Maps. They will begin to learn what the various symbols on an OS map mean. Pupils will use google maps to compare Bradley Stoke with a more rural setting such as Almondsbury, a more urban setting such as Bristol and a more industrial setting such as Filton.

Art

In Term 5 we will be looking at the artist Jenny Urquhart. We will be exploring different techniques such as collage and texture. Following on from this we will create our own collage piece.

D & T

In Term 6 we will be learning about structures and linking it with our History topic of Bristol. We will be creating a miniature bridge – building on our knowledge of building with lolly stick frames from KS1.

PSHE

Term 5: Relationships
We will be exploring the roles and responsibilities of family members and strategies to keep safe.

Term 6: Changing me
We will be learning about how animals and people change as they grow up as well as how our bodies change on the inside and outside.

PE

During Term 5 PE sessions we will be exploring fitness and cricket. This will include learning the key core skills that make up these sports and applying them to games towards the end of the term.

During Term 6 we will be practising key athletic skills for sports day practice. Alongside this we will also be learning the rules of rounders and applying this to team vs team practise.

French

In French we are going to be continue using ‘Language Angels’ to further our French knowledge. We will recap colours, numbers and basic social phrases.

Home Learning – how you can help at home?

Reading

We ask that you read with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. Please record any reading you have done with your child in their reading record as this will count towards their Reading Challenge (meaning your child can earn the prize of a book every time they read 50 times). This does not need to be limited to the books children bring home from school. It can include any books they have at home, any reading they do with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Reading books will be changed and reads will be counted on a Friday.

Spelling

At the beginning of term, your child will bring home the spellings for each week of that term. On each Friday, they will be tested on the spellings for that week in the form of a dictation. Completed spelling dictations will be stuck into your child’s homework book so you can see how they got on (and where they may require further support).

Each set of spellings will contain the patterns / rules that we have been learning in class and are a way of reinforcing these.  Please practise spelling at least 3 times each week with your child.

Maths

The children should now know which level they are on for Maths Planets – if there is any confusion please come and see your child’s class teacher.
