Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

In Year 2 our teachers are Miss Johnstone (2J) and Miss White (2W)

Our teaching assistants are Mrs Dowson, Miss Durbin and Miss Herbert

Our PE days are:

  • Monday and Friday for 2J
  • Thursday and Friday for 2W

On these days please send your child into school wearing their full PE kit. This should include weather appropriate clothes, trainers and their house colour t-shirt. No patterned T shirts or hoodies please.

Please remember to label all your child’s clothes and ensure they have a coat in school every day.

Please ensure reading books and reading records are brought to school every day. Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday.

Current Learning

Term 1-2

Reading

We will be looking at ‘The Crow’s Tale’ by Naomi Howarth. We will be exploring this text and will participate in a range of activities around this text.
Every week the children will read with an adult in their guided reading groups. During these sessions, the children will read a wide range of texts and develop their word reading, fluency, comprehension and reading aloud skills.

Please engage in our whole school reading challenge to support your child’s reading at home. For every 50 reads they can choose a reading book from Mrs Carver.

Writing

Our writing will link to our class text ‘The Crow’s Tale’.
We will be exploring the skills of:

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Phase 5 spelling
  • Adjectives
  • Past tense verbs
  • Coordinating conjunctions
  • Instruction writing

Mathematics

In Maths we will be learning:
We will be covering the objectives of:

  • Place value- Knowledge and understanding of two digit numbers.
  • Addition and subtraction- number bonds to 20, adding/ subtracting multiples of 10
  • Multiplication and division- learning to count in 2, 5 and 10, drawing arrays, sharing and grouping.
  • Properties of 2D shapes
  • Symmetry and pattern

Science

In science we will be exploring materials. We will cover the following objectives:

  • Explore and compare different materials
  • Explore real objects and think about the materials they are made of and why they were chosen.
  • Explore how the shape of some solid objects can be changed by bending, stretching and twisting the materials they are made from.

Geography

During Term 1 our learning will focus on where we live. We will learn:

  • Our closest city Bristol and what a city is.
  • Physical and human features of our local area.
  • Some key physical and human features of the UK, including key cities, rivers and mountains.
  • UK weather and the four seasons.

In our Term 2 learning we will focus on:

  • The 7 continents
  • The 5 oceans
  • The equator and how this impacts climate
  • Learning about hot and cold places and how they are different.

D & T

In Term 2 we will be tasting a variety of different types of biscuits for our food technology unit. We will explore biscuits from different continents, linked to our Term 2 learning. We will choose our favourite type and we will work together to mix ingredients, learn about measurements and finally decorate a tasty biscuit for us to try.

P.E.

We will be following our new PE scheme which will allow the children to try a variety of sports across the year. In terms 1 and 2, we will be covering the fundamentals of sports and then move on to invasion games.

PSHE

In Term 1 our theme is ‘Being Me in My World’ where we will discuss topics such as being resilient, the class rules, our rights as a learner, managing worries and fears and what it feels like to belong.
In Term 2 our theme is ‘Celebrating Difference’ where we will focus on learning to stand up for ourselves, what it means when someone is bullied, how it feels to be a friend and what it means to be kind.

Music

In Term 1 and 2 we will be exploring Call and Response through creating different animal noises and learning how to play different percussion instruments to tell a musical story.

Art

In Term 1 we will learn about the artist Seurat. We will begin by exploring his artwork and experimenting his style in our sketchbooks. We will also use Access Art to learn about different styles of drawing and how to use shapes.

Home Learning – how you can help

Reading

We ask that you read with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. Please record any reads you have done with your child in their reading record as we will be continuing the reading bug challenge. Please note we will count a maximum of 7 reads a week.

Your child will have their reading book changed each week and will be given a book matched to their phonic level. We are encouraging the children to become fluent readers so please read the same book several times until your child is able to read it fluently without having to decode words.

Your child will also have one library session each week where they are able to choose a library book. The children have free choice with their library books.

Reading does not have to be limited to the books children bring home from school. It can include any books they have at home, reads with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Maths

The children will be continuing with Maths Planets this year and will carry on from their end point in Year 1.  Please practise your child’s maths facts at least 3 times a week. If your child is stuck on a level for more than 4 weeks, then we will intervene at school.

Spelling

Your child should have the termly overview stuck in their homework books.

They will then be tested on these spellings each Friday. The tests will be stuck into their yellow homework books so you can see how they have got on.

The spellings will contain the new sound patterns that we will be learning in class and are a way of reinforcing these spelling rules. Please practise at least 3 times each week with your child.
