Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

In Year 2 our teachers are Miss Johnstone (2J) and Miss White (2W)

Our teaching assistants are Mrs Dowson, Miss Durbin and Miss Herbert

Our PE days are:

  • Monday and Friday for 2J
  • Thursday and Friday for 2W

On these days please send your child into school wearing their full PE kit. This should include weather appropriate clothes, trainers and their house colour t-shirt. No patterned T shirts or hoodies please.

Please remember to label all your child’s clothes and ensure they have a coat in school every day.

Please ensure reading books and reading records are brought to school every day. Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday.

Current Learning

Term 5 – 6

Reading

During the summer term we will be using a book called ‘Miranda the Explorer’ to support our reading and comprehension skills. We will be looking at a range of inference questions where the children have to try and understand what is being said in the text without it actually being written. We are now doing whole class guided reading sessions in order to prepare the children for the transition to Year 3.

Writing

During the summer term we will be using ‘Nen and the Lonely Fisherman’ by Ian Eagleton and James Mayhew and ‘The Egg’ by MP Robertson’ to provide us with a variety of writing opportunities such as:

  • Dairy entries
  • Recounts
  • Character descriptions
  • Poetry
  • Instructions
  • Letter

We will be using these writing opportunities to apply grammatical skills that we have been learning throughout the year.

Mathematics

We will be covering the objectives of:

  • Measure (capacity and temperature)
  • Position and direction
  • Rounding and estimation
  • Names and properties of 3D shapes
  • Statistics and data handling

We will also be recapping previous learning from throughout the year.

Science

Animals including humans- During this unit we will understand that animals have offspring that grow into adults, investigate what animals and humans need to survive, understand why exercise and eating the right amount of foods is important and understand why good hygiene keeps us health.

Living things and their habitats- During this unit we will learn the difference between living, non-living and dead, name some animals and plants, explore different habitats, explore why some habitats are better for certain animals than others and describe a simple food chain.

ICT

In term 5 we will become photographers. We will learn how to take photographs using a digital device and then use our skills to take photographs of the beautiful nature that we have on our school grounds. Once we have taken these photos we will edit them and build a portfolio.

D & T

Our DT unit in term 5 links to our science learning. We will be designing and creating our own brilliant bug hotels! The children will use their learning from our Living things and their habitats unit to create a bug hotel that appeals to a specific micro-habitat.

Art

In term 6 we will be learning about David Hockey. We will learn how an iPad can be used to draw/ paint images and then create our own artwork based on this approach.

History

In term 6 we will be studying Mary Anning and Sir David Attenborough. We will learn about the lives of these significant individuals and research the important discoveries that they both made. We will learn how Mary Anning had an influence on David Attenborough’s work today and finish by comparing their lives and findings.

RE

In term 5 we will be looking at Islam and Christianity again and we will be thinking about how we should care for others and the world. We will also be thinking about why this is so important. We will also be discussing what we believe to be right and wrong and how this helps to make us as a person.

P.E.

In term 5 we will be looking at striking and fielding games as well as athletics. In term 6 we will be looking at team games and agility. We will also be practising for Sports Day!

PSHE

In term 5 we will be looking at Relationships and will focus on families and how they can be made up of different people. We will also identify some of the things that may cause conflict with our friends and how to resolve them.
In term 6 we will be looking at ‘Changes’. We will learn about the life cycles in nature and will talk about the natural processes of growing from young to old. We will also look at the physical differences between boys and girls and will use the correct names from parts of the body.

Music

During terms 5 and 6 we will be looking at different styles of music. In our first unit the children will use instruments to represent animals, copying rhythms and create call and response rhythms. The children will then explore the song ‘Once a Man Fell in a Well’, playing it using tuned percussion and reading simple symbols representing pitch.

Home Learning – how you can help

Reading

We ask that you read with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. Please record any reads you have done with your child in their reading record as we will be continuing the reading bug challenge. Please note we will count a maximum of 7 reads a week.

Your child will have their reading book changed each week and will be given a book matched to their phonic level. We are encouraging the children to become fluent readers so please read the same book several times until your child is able to read it fluently without having to decode words.

Your child will also have one library session each week where they are able to choose a library book. The children have free choice with their library books.

Reading does not have to be limited to the books children bring home from school. It can include any books they have at home, reads with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Maths

The children will be continuing with Maths Planets this year and will carry on from their end point in Year 1.  Please practise your child’s maths facts at least 3 times a week. If your child is stuck on a level for more than 4 weeks, then we will intervene at school.

Spelling

Your child should have the termly overview stuck in their homework books.

They will then be tested on these spellings each Friday. The tests will be stuck into their yellow homework books so you can see how they have got on.

The spellings will contain the new sound patterns that we will be learning in class and are a way of reinforcing these spelling rules. Please practise at least 3 times each week with your child.
