Welcome to the Year 1 Class Page

Our classes are..

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please send your child into school wearing their PE kit. All items should be labelled.

Tapestry

We also use an online ‘learning journal’ known as Tapestry to track the achievements and interests of your child.

EYFS staff regularly update your child’s journal and we strongly encourage families to upload their own contributions.

We often upload class notices and other important information regarding just Reception children on our Tapestry page.

Check your notification settings to ensure you receive all updates. If you do not have access to your account, please speak to a member of the Reception team.

Current Learning

Term 5 – 6

Reading

This term we will be continuing to recap our phase 5 phonemes and how to read these within a word to ensure that the children are secure before moving up to Year 2. We will be continuing to work on our common exception words and practising these in our reading books.

Please continue to write in your child’s reading record every time they read at home. It would also be great if you could discuss stories with your child once you have read them and ask them questions to check comprehension.

Writing

Our class texts this term will be based around the story ‘Grandads Island’. As in previous terms, we will be using this book as a stimulus for our own writing. We will be continuing to focus on using capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and for a name, full stops at the end of a sentence, spaces between words so it can be read back as well as beginning to add in the words ‘and’ ‘but’ and ‘because’ into our sentences. As well as focusing on applying our phonic knowledge, we will also be continuing to work on presentation and handwriting, always trying to write on.

Mathematics

We will be covering the objectives of:

  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Fractions
  • Place Value to 100
  • Money

Science

We will be starting with our unit on materials- in this unit, we will be identifying and naming a range of every day materials. We will describe the simple physical properties of these materials and group materials by their properties as well as distinguishing items from the material they are made out of. We will be introducing plants. We will identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees and we will identify and describe the basic structure of a variety of common flowering plants, including trees.

P.E.

This term we are focusing on Gymnastics, Striking and Fielding Games, Fitness and finishing with sports day prep.

Art

We will be looking at painting and focusing on the artist Georgia O’Keeffe. We are going to be using a variety of tools and techniques and identifying primary colours by name.

We will also be focusing on Dan Mather and looking into printing skills and creating our own stamp.

D&T

We are designing a friend for Beegu. We will be matching and sorting fabrics into groups, experimenting with cutting and shaping the fabric and experimenting by naturally dying fabrics.

Music

In Term 6, we will be combining all the musical concepts we have learnt in Year One for an underwater themed performance incorporating instrumental, vocal and body sounds. We will learn how to recognise symbols which represent pitch, rhythm and dynamics.

PSHE

This term we will be looking at Relationships and will focus on families and how they can be made up of different people. We will also identify some of the things that may cause conflict with our friends and how to resolve them.

In Term 6 we will be looking at ‘Changes’. We will think about changes that we have experienced and discuss the transition to Year 2 that we have coming up. We will also look at the physical differences between boys and girls and will use the correct names for parts of the body.

Helping at Home

Home learning is a valuable way of consolidating the work your child has completed in school. The following guide explains how we approach home learning in Year 1. If you have any further questions please feel free to come and speak with us.

Reading

We ask that you read with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. Please record any reading you have done with your child, in their reading record as these count towards the ‘Reading Bug Challenge’. We will count up to 7 reads a week. When your child reaches 50 reads they are able to choose a book (which they can keep) from Mrs Carver, Mrs Collins or Mrs Jackson.

We will change their reading books on a Monday but please make sure their reading book and reading record is in school every day. Each week your child will have a minimum of one reading session with an adult. Reading books will be matched to your child’s phonic knowledge. They will only bring home reading books with phonemes they are already confident with and are able to decode. Children should be able to read their books fluently, only needing to decode one or two words on each page. It is important to re-read the reading book sent home multiple times which is why we only send home one book a week. Remember to discuss the story with them to help with comprehension.

Your child will also have one library session on a Wednesday where they can choose a library book. The children have free choice with their library books. Reading does not have to be limited to the books your child brings home from school. It can include any books they have at home, any reading they do with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Phonics

Please revisit the phonemes taught in Reception – continuing to practise reading and writing words with these phonemes will help to consolidate your child’s understanding of them. In Year 1, we will be teaching phase 5 – the overview of the term’s Phonics learning can be found in their home learning book. We will be continuing word lists in Year 1. Once your child has completed the Reception list, they will move onto Year 1 lists and a new booklet will be sent home. You will also be given a list of Common Exception Words (CEW) which children are expected to be able to read and write by the end of Year 1. Maths

The children will be continuing with Maths Planets this year and will start on the Year 1 levels. Details of Year 1’s levels can be found in the curriculum section of our website. The Numbots App is a fun and engaging way for your child to practise number bonds and simple addition and subtraction at home as they move through Year 1. Please practise your child’s Maths Planets at least 3 times a week. Children may spend several weeks on one level – if your child remains on the same level for more than 3 weeks we will provide additional support at school. Each time your child passes their maths planets they will come home with a sticker. Once they have completed Level 4C, 6C or 8C they will be awarded a certificate and badge.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long should my child spend on home learning?
    Shorter, regular practice of key skills and time spent reading is generally more beneficial to children than spending extended periods working at home each day. It would be reasonable for a Year 1 child to spend a maximum of 20 minutes several times a week on learning at home.
  • What should I do if my child is struggling to complete their home learning?
    If your child is struggling then please speak to the class teacher straightaway. If they are struggling because they are finding it hard then we can give you strategies to help. If they are struggling because they do not want to do their home learning, again, we can give incentives to make this a smoother process at home.
