Welcome to the Year 1 Class Page

Our classes are..

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please send your child into school wearing their PE kit. All items should be labelled.

Tapestry

We also use an online ‘learning journal’ known as Tapestry to track the achievements and interests of your child.

EYFS staff regularly update your child’s journal and we strongly encourage families to upload their own contributions.

We often upload class notices and other important information regarding just Reception children on our Tapestry page.

Check your notification settings to ensure you receive all updates. If you do not have access to your account, please speak to a member of the Reception team.

Current Learning

Term 1-2

Reading

This term in Phonics we will be focusing on recapping our phase 3 sounds that we learnt in Reception so we can fill any gaps. We will be applying these in our reading and also including comprehension questions to make sure we are understanding what we are reading fully. Children will have a reading book matched to their phonics ability for you to read at home. They will also have a word box which links to the phonic sounds they need to practice. We will check the word lists on a Monday. Please engage in the whole school reading challenge. We expect every child to read at home at least 5 times a week.

Writing

Our class text is Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. We will be using this book as a stimulus when writing our own stories. We will be focusing on using capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and for a name, full stops at the end of a sentence, spaces between words so it can be read back and becoming more independent in our writing. We will also be focusing on applying our phase 3 sounds and common exception words, we are also focusing on our presentation and handwriting, always trying to write on the line.

Mathematics

In Maths we will be learning:

  • To recognise, count, order and write numbers 0-10 with no reversals.
  • To find one more and one less than any number 1-10.
  • To understand addition and subtract as combining 2 sets of objects and write addition/subtraction sentences.
  • Maths Planets – there is an overview on the website and we will put a sticker in their reading record when they have passed a level.

Science

In Science we will be looking at animals including humans. We will be identifying and grouping animals and look at carnivores, herbivores, omnivores reptiles and fish. We will also be labelling parts of our bodies and identifying the 5 senses. Our science learning will be linked to our art where will be looking at the structures of different animals.

History

We will be introducing history this term by thinking about our family. We will identify what is happening now and what has happened in the past. We will learn about timelines and how they are used to plot events such as events in our own lives. This is a great chance to link learning between home and school.

Geography

This term we will learn about their immediate surroundings and how maps, plans and aerial views can be used to show this information.
We will create our own maps and identify a planned route on a map.

Art

We are looking at an artist called John Ruskin. We will be looking at controlling different media to make marks and will end with observational drawings of animals.

D&T

This term we will be learning how to make a structure using l joints. We will investigate different ways to make this and decide which is the best material to use. We will plan out or design and end by making our own frame.

R.E.

Our RE focus this term is Christianity. We will be thinking about who is a Christian and what do they believe in. We will also learn about how people have different religions and the similarities and differences between them.

PSHE

We will be focusing our learning on us as a learner. We will be learning how to be the best version of us and how we can excel at being a learner. We will then look at how we are all different and that these things should be celebrated.

Computing

We will be exploring Purple Mash and the importance of online safety. We will be creating avatars for ourselves and learning to navigate the website.

Music

This term we will be learning all about the pulse in music and how to follow the pulse. We will investigate how the pulse, pitch and rhythm all work together in a piece of music.

P.E.

During this term, we will be focusing on different ways we can move around the room and how we can balance as well as working on our ball skills.

Helping at Home

Home learning is a valuable way of consolidating the work your child has completed in school. The following guide explains how we approach home learning in Year 1. If you have any further questions please feel free to come and speak with us.

Reading

We ask that you read with your child 5 times a week. This only needs to be a 10 minute session and you don’t have to finish a whole book every time. Please record any reading you have done with your child, in their reading record as these count towards the ‘Reading Bug Challenge’. We will count up to 7 reads a week. When your child reaches 50 reads they are able to choose a book (which they can keep) from Mrs Carver, Mrs Collins or Mrs Jackson.

We will change their reading books on a Monday but please make sure their reading book and reading record is in school every day. Each week your child will have a minimum of one reading session with an adult. Reading books will be matched to your child’s phonic knowledge. They will only bring home reading books with phonemes they are already confident with and are able to decode. Children should be able to read their books fluently, only needing to decode one or two words on each page. It is important to re-read the reading book sent home multiple times which is why we only send home one book a week. Remember to discuss the story with them to help with comprehension.

Your child will also have one library session on a Wednesday where they can choose a library book. The children have free choice with their library books. Reading does not have to be limited to the books your child brings home from school. It can include any books they have at home, any reading they do with siblings or reading books from the local library.

Phonics

Please revisit the phonemes taught in Reception – continuing to practise reading and writing words with these phonemes will help to consolidate your child’s understanding of them. In Year 1, we will be teaching phase 5 – the overview of the term’s Phonics learning can be found in their home learning book. We will be continuing word lists in Year 1. Once your child has completed the Reception list, they will move onto Year 1 lists and a new booklet will be sent home. You will also be given a list of Common Exception Words (CEW) which children are expected to be able to read and write by the end of Year 1. If you are unsure of any of the phonemes being taught in phonics, you can find videos on the Phonics page of our school website.

Maths

The children will be continuing with Maths Planets this year and will start on the Year 1 levels. Details of Year 1’s levels can be found in the curriculum section of our website. The Numbots App is a fun and engaging way for your child to practise number bonds and simple addition and subtraction at home as they move through Year 1. Please practise your child’s Maths Planets at least 3 times a week. Children may spend several weeks on one level – if your child remains on the same level for more than 3 weeks we will provide additional support at school. Each time your child passes their maths planets they will come home with a sticker. Once they have completed Level 4C, 6C or 8C they will be awarded a certificate and badge.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long should my child spend on home learning?
    Shorter, regular practice of key skills and time spent reading is generally more beneficial to children than spending extended periods working at home each day. It would be reasonable for a Year 1 child to spend a maximum of 20 minutes several times a week on learning at home.
  • What should I do if my child is struggling to complete their home learning?
    If your child is struggling then please speak to the class teacher straightaway. If they are struggling because they are finding it hard then we can give you strategies to help. If they are struggling because they do not want to do their home learning, again, we can give incentives to make this a smoother process at home.
