Welcome to the Reception Class Page

We have one Reception class at Wheatfield Primary RT

Miss Tate is the Class Teacher and Mrs Binding is Teaching Assistant

Children need to wear their PE kits to school on a Friday.
In the morning, we will have PE. In the afternoon we will take our adventures outside in our Wild Wood and allotment area. Please ensure you child has their outdoor waterproofs and wellies in school – we go out in all weather.

Library books will be changed on Thursday so please ensure they are in school on this day.

Please also remember to clearly label all of your child’s clothes and belongings.

Tapestry

We also use an online ‘learning journal’ known as Tapestry to track the achievements and interests of your child.

EYFS staff regularly update your child’s journal and we strongly encourage families to upload their own contributions.

We often upload class notices and other important information regarding just Reception children on our Tapestry page.

Check your notification settings to ensure you receive all updates. If you do not have access to your account, please speak to a member of the Reception team.

Communication Box

We have a yellow communication box by our classroom doors each morning. Please put your child’s Phonics booklet and any letters/notes in here.

There will always be one member of staff from the Reception Team on the classroom door each morning to greet your child, so if you have any queries they will be available to help and pass messages on.

Whole school notices including key dates and information will be published in the weekly school newsletter.

Current Learning

Term 1 – 2

During the autumn term we will be exploring our school and the school grounds. The children will have opportunities to familiarise themselves with key areas of our school including their classrooms, dining hall, cloakrooms, library and toilets. We will talk about our homes and where they are within our local community and begin to explore maps. We will explore different homes from around the world too.

We will also be thinking about how things have changed. We will talk about how we have changed since we were babies and share family and baby photographs. We will consider where we live and how it has changed in Bradley Stoke and think about how toys have changed, comparing our own teddy bears to the very first teddy bear ever created!

PSED

At Wheatfield Primary we follow a scheme called Jigsaw. We use the focus for each unit as an overarching ‘theme’ for each term as we value the importance of PSED in your child’s development. These themes link to an overarching ‘big question!’

The theme for Term 1 is ‘Being Me in My World!’

Reading

During the Autumn term we will be enjoying our Fab 5 books ‘Alphabet Ice Cream’, ‘Lots of Dots’, ‘Bumblebear’, ‘Solomon Crocodile’ and ‘Ruby’s Worry. Through whole class book talk sessions, we focus on listening to stories, asking and answering questions, and orally rehearsing to develop our vocabulary.

Daily phonic sessions to help your child begin to read words
Your child will be able to borrow 1 school library book per week
Your child will receive a ‘Wheatfield Phonics’ booklet
Your child will receive a reading book as and when they’re ready
We will start our whole school ‘Reading Bug’ challenge to support reading at home. For every 50 reads, your child will get to choose a brand-new book to keep from Mrs Carver!

Writing

During Term 1 and 2 we will be developing our gross motor skills and our fine motor skills to strengthen our hand muscles which supports early writing. We will also focus on the following skills:

Develop our pencil control and grip
Link sounds to letters and begin to form them
Learn to recognise and write our own name
Begin to write captions, labels and simple words

Mathematics

In Term 1 we will be covering the objectives of:

Learning to recognise, count and subitise (recognising an amount without counting) numbers 1, 2 ,3
Seeing patterns, continuing and copying them
Positional and directional language (in, on, under, down)

In Term 2 we will be covering the objectives of:

Learning to recognise, count and subitise numbers 4 and 5
Exploring 1 more and 1 less than a number to 5
Time to sequence event in the day (before, after, next)

Your child will receive a ‘Math Planet’ booklet which will have our termly objectives in. There is lots of guidance and ideas on ways to support at home with their learning.

Science

At Wheatfield Primary School we are very fortunate to have such fantastic outdoor spaces including our amazing onsite forest ‘The Wild Wood’. We think about and explore our four seasons throughout the entire year by engaging in Wild Wood sessions each week. We use our school grounds in all weathers so it is essential your child has a waterproof coat and wellies in school every day.

Art

During Term 1 and 2 the children will be developing their confidence in self-selecting by using the classroom resources. This may include junk modelling and using craft materials by using their imaginations to create, design and make creations. The children will be exploring self-portraits and collaging.

Music and Poetry

During Term 1 and 2 the children will learn many rhymes from Poetry Basket. We use Kapow to learn songs including popular nursery rhymes such as ‘I’m a little teapot’. We will explore making sounds using body percussion and by exploring instruments.

PE

During Term 1 and 2 the children will develop their fine and gross motor skills. We will begin PE in Term 2 and will focusing on body co-ordination and balance. Children come into school wearing their PE kits. Please ensure children wear clothes in line with the school uniform policy.

ICT

Our children have access to a class interactive panel and an iPad to take photographs.

We use Tapestry at school to provide speaking and listening opportunities to share home news.

The Wild Wood…

We have a fantastic on-site woodland which we call “The Wild Wood”. If you haven’t already, please send in a pair of welly boots for your child to keep in school.
In Term 1 and 2 we will be exploring the wild wood every Friday afternoon and will learn how to keep safe whilst engaging in lots of fun activities linked to the seasons.

Useful Information

What should my child bring to school?

Please label every item that belongs to your child including their school uniform.

You could use a permanent pen or buy personalised name labels from the internet which you can stick onto their belongings.

P.E Kit

Our P.E days will usually be on Thursdays and Fridays.

Please make sure that your child comes into school on a Thursday and Friday wearing their school P.E kit.

*We will be starting PE once the children are all in full time*

Please provide a spare change of clothes in case they get muddy/have an accident

(Spare clothes: this should be keeping with the school colours – a top, bottoms, underwear and socks)
