We have one Reception class at Wheatfield Primary RT
- Miss Tate is the Class Teacher and Mrs Binding is Teaching Assistant
Children need to wear their PE kits to school on a Friday.
In the morning, we will have PE. In the afternoon we will take our adventures outside in our Wild Wood and allotment area. Please ensure you child has their outdoor waterproofs and wellies in school – we go out in all weather.
Please also remember to clearly label all of your child’s clothes and belongings.

Tapestry
We also use an online ‘learning journal’ known as Tapestry to track the achievements and interests of your child.
EYFS staff regularly update your child’s journal and we strongly encourage families to upload their own contributions.
We often upload class notices and other important information regarding just Reception children on our Tapestry page.
Check your notification settings to ensure you receive all updates. If you do not have access to your account, please speak to a member of the Reception team.
Communication Box
We have a yellow communication box by our classroom doors each morning. Please put your child’s Phonics booklet and any letters/notes in here.
There will always be one member of staff from the Reception Team on the classroom door each morning to greet your child, so if you have any queries they will be available to help and pass messages on.
Whole school notices including key dates and information will be published in the weekly school newsletter.
Current Learning
Term 5 – 6
PSED
At Wheatfield Primary we follow a scheme called Jigsaw. We use the focus for each unit as an overarching ‘theme’ for each term, as we value the importance of PSED in your child’s development. These themes link to an overarching ‘big question!’
The theme for Term 5 is all about relationships. We will be focusing on…

- How to make friends and stop ourselves from feeling lonely

The theme for Term 6 is all about how we change. We will be focusing on…

- Understanding that everyone is unique and special
- Understanding that we grow and change from babies to adults
- Preparing for our transition into Year One
Reading
We will be reading lots of stories; many will be linked to our themes. Some of the books we will read include: What the ladybird heard, Gigantic, Jack and the beanstalk and the Butterfly Dance. Through whole class book talk sessions, we focus on listening to stories, asking and answering questions, and orally rehearsing to develop our vocabulary.
Please continue to write in your child’s reading record every time they read at home.
1 read per day is counted so a total of 7 can be achieved each week. The total reads are recorded by staff in your child’s yellow reading record book. Once your child achieves 50, 100, 150 they will receive a book of their choice from Mrs Carver.
Don’t forget to keep practising your child’s word list at home. Once your child has completed them, please send their booklet into school for a review. We aim to change reading books on a Monday and word lists on a Friday.
In Phonics we will be consolidating Phase 3 and beginning Phase 4. We will also be learning our Phase 4 common exception words.
Writing
During the summer term, we will use our knowledge of phonics to write words, captions and sentences. We will be focusing on our handwriting by ensuring we are trying our best to form letters correctly and writing on the line.

Maths
In our maths learning we will be covering the objectives of:
- Consolidating and mastery of all objectives covered with a focus on counting, composition, comparing and ordering
- Counting to 20 and beyond.
- Building numbers and looking at patterns beyond 10
- Addition and subtraction within 10
- Doubling to 10
- Sharing and grouping
- Odd and Even numbers
- Recognise and describe the characteristics of 3D shapes
Your child will receive the ‘Math Planet Gold Rings 1’ booklet in Term 5 and ‘Gold Rings 2’ in Term 6, which will have guidance on ways to support further at home.
We were amazed with how many children achieved their Silver Rings 1 and 2 certificates for the spring term and we were even more delighted with how many children achieved their badges too!
History
Science
In Term 5 we will be exploring materials. We will test key materials such as plastic, cardboard, wood and paper against their strength and suitability for a house. We will also explore minibeasts, and we will look at the life cycle of a caterpillar by hatching our own butterflies. We will explore habitats and the minibeasts that live in them. In Term 6 we will be growing our own plants and learning about what plants need to grow well.

Useful Information
What should my child bring to school?
Please label every item that belongs to your child including their school uniform.
You could use a permanent pen or buy personalised name labels from the internet which you can stick onto their belongings.
P.E Kit
Our P.E days will usually be on Thursdays and Fridays.
Please make sure that your child comes into school on a Thursday and Friday wearing their school P.E kit.
*We will be starting PE once the children are all in full time*
Please provide a spare change of clothes in case they get muddy/have an accident
(Spare clothes: this should be keeping with the school colours – a top, bottoms, underwear and socks)
